This is an interesting slot machine with some unusual history behind it. This is a 1939 model Mills brand Diamond Front slot machine. After over 40 years of manufacturing slot machines, Mills had refined the mechanism to be nearly failsafe, quiet, and smooth. When World War II broke out the factory was ideally suited as a large machine shop for the war effort. They took on all kinds of contracts and even though it seemed unpatriotic at times they were able to sneak through a few slot machines based on this 1939 model. Aluminum was impossible to get, the resource went entirely to the war effort especially the manufacture of airplanes. This did not stop the determined manufacturer. They went from aluminum to cast-iron so they could continue making the slot machines that they had been known for for the previous 40 or 50 years. This particular slot machine is in cast-iron, which means that it was built during World War II. The original 1939 models were often finished in chrome, but because of the war, chrome was also dedicated to the war effort. This machine has its original thick wrinkle and glitter paint in almost immaculate condition. The machine comes with everything original: the cash box, paper strips, instruction sheet, original lock with matching serial number and key, nearly perfect paint, and optional drill proof sides. It is untouched inside and out. The 75-year-old grease that has hardened, and a couple of springs have fatigued with age. It won’t take much to have this operating is smooth as the day it came from the factory. This “oh so” original machine is built like a tank, and a lucky find.

1c Mills QT “SWEETHEART” – Penny Play
I always feel fortunate when I am able to buy a slot machine in original unmolested condition. This machine was built in 1942 and is cast-iron because aluminum was not available. Mills Novelty Company, the manufacturer, was essentially a machine shop and converted to building gun parts for the war effort. But their original business was slot machines, so when they could, they built a few slot machines right during the middle of World War II. This is such an example. It retains the original paint & locks with matching keys. It’s original location was the Tonopah Stage Stop. I am the 3rd owner of this rare original one cent slot machine. It is known as the QT because it is small and could be lifted on to the counter on the QT. It is known as the “Sweetheart” because of the heart designed into the casting.

RESTORED MILLS OWL SLOT MACHINE
This is the one that started Mills Novelty Company’s success. They actually made these Owl machines before they used the Owl logo. The Owl was so successful that they incorporated the symbol on all their products from then on until their demise in the 1950s. Fifty years the Mills Company dominated the slot machine industry, and it had started with this. This one was restored years ago by Orrin Yaeger, of Denver CO. He was meticulous in his work. This machine features copper flash plating, quarter sawn oak, and a fabulous lithographed pin wheel. I have enjoyed it for years, for $17,000 you can enjoy it many more.
